BIG SHARK CAUGHT
CRUISING IN HARBOUR. SEVENTEEN YOUNG ON^S. A big shark that was seen several times last week cruising in the upper harbour was caught on Sunday at Auckland, by two enterprising fishermen between Point Chevalier and Kauri Point. The shark measured 9tt. 3Jin. in length, and contained seven, teen young ones, ranging in size from 2ft. Sin. to 2ft. 41n. in length. The shark was caught in deep water at high tide on Sunday, shortly before mid-day. Two men, who had prevh ous'y seen It off Point Chevalier, went out in a dinghy, armed with two shark lines, on ample supply of bait, and sev. eral choppers. Their enterpr.se was quickly rewarded ;and, after an exciting time, they succeeded in bringin • the monster ashore on the beach. When opened, It was found to con. tain a “nursery” of active young ones, about the size of a large kahawai. Few other sharks have been caught in the Waitemata with such a healthy collection of young ones. The present 'shark had apparently been cruluslng in leisurely style during Its time in the upper harbour, and Is thought to be the sam e one as was seen near P.onsonby wharf last week.
