The Federation of British Industries in a letter to Mr Churchill congratu lating him on the removal of loas restrictions, points out the continued instability of the currencies in se' 3rai of the most important trading countries, which is unfairly handicapping British manufacturers. It urges the Government to take cart that no country with an unstable cur roncy is permitted to borrow in Bri tain, except for stabilising its curren cy.

He gave a comprehensive report of the operations of his Department and said that allegations regarding unlit immigrants landing in New Zealand and becoming a burden on the State were absolutely unfounded. He said that with the many thousands of immigrants who had landed In New Zealand in the past few years, they would not hope to get 100 per cent efficiency, but the proportion of unfit was very small compared with the number .coming to the country. He had gone to Auckland and interviewed a representative of the British Empire scheme and had endeavoured to obtain permission to use part of th>' British oGvernment’s allotment for assisting emigrants to come hero t« be devoted to house-building for these immigrants, but without success. Hr* explained that the reason why the Immigrants were not nominated to go to Invercargill and some of the towns in the North Island direct, was because the shipping companies contracted to carry the emigrants to the centres only. His Department, how ever paid the cost of transport of iiu migrants from the central ports to towns to where they wished to go. He said that the High Commissioner’s office in London was exercising excellent discretion in selecting suitable immigrants and that his department was not lacking in an endeavour to bring about the full success ,of the scheme.
