SHANNON
BOWLING. [From Our Own Correspondent.] The gala day arranged by , the Manawatu Bowling Centre was held on the Shannon gr&en on Saturday. The day was an ideal one from a bowler’s point of view and tire green was in perfect order, there being a large attendance of bowlers and friends. Kinks from Levin, Manawatu, Terrace End and Takaro were present, helping to enliven the proceedings. The president (Mr. J. T. Bovis) of the Shannon Club, In opening, spoke a few appreciative words in honour of the late Queen Alexandra and asked those present to observe the .solemn occasion by standing in silence for one minute. He said the Manawatu Centre deserved the thanks of all present for the idea which would help to keep the small, country club s together. In the evening the ceremony oi officially turning on the electric lights over the green w r as performed, numbers of coloured lights erected around the pavilion and surroundings greatly adding to the scene. There was a large attendance of the public and most of the visiting bowlers had remained for the evening. Games and competitions were then played. A rinks championship of seven heads was won by Gagliardi (Shannon) from Tantrum (Terrace End). During the evening the Maori string band was in attendance and the music was much appreciated. A ladies' committee had charge of the supper arrangements and had a busy time. The scores in the rink championship were:— First round. —Tantrum (Takaro) 9 v. Davidson (Terrace End) 5; Bovis (Shannon) 6 v. Gagliardi (Shannon) 10, Gunning (Shannon) 6 v. Carr (Shannon) 2, Knowles (Shannon) ft v. Murray (Shannon) 5, Hosie (Levin) 8 v. Spencer (Shannon) 5. Second round: Gagliardi 9 v. Gunning 8; Tantrum 6 v. Knowles 5; Hosie a bye. Third round: Tantrum 6, Hosie S. Gagliardi a bye. Pinal, Gagliardi 11 v. Tantrum 2. The final shield match will be played at Levin this week. The following will represent Shannon: Butt, Aim, Clayton. Jones (skip); Newton, Bartholomew, Spencer, E. Spencer (skip). Choral Society. On Thursday night next, the final concert of the season will be given at the Maoriland Theatre, Shannon, commencing at 8 p.m. A capital programme of humour and song has been drawn up, to be submitted by firstclass talent, so that a record house should meet the efforts of the Society. Painful Accident. An accident occurred to Jas. King, son of Mrs. T. King, of Stout street. A stick thrown by another lad hit him behind the knee, severing a small artery, the injury necessitating medical attention.
