TOKORANGI.

[From Our Own Correspondent.] Mr. Hoani To Heuheu (son of the late To Heuheu Tukino M.L.C.) who is now the recognised paramount chief of the whole of the Ngaoti Tuwharetoa and its sub-tribes, last week paid a visit to Ms uncle, Mr. lwll.au Te Heuheu, of Tokorangi. He was welcomed strictly according’ to Maori rites and customs, and in a manner, befitting his high rank. Several residents made speeches, by way of welcoming Mr. Hoani Te Heuheu, referring to the greatness of his ancestors through generations, down to his late father, and that as h e had succeeded to the title of Heuheu VI the hope was expressed that he would endeavour to follow in the footsteps of his father, who had always shown consideration to both races (the pakehas and Maoris). Reference was, also made to the- career of th c late To Heuheu Tukino, who while living took an active part in politics, and was always advancing the welfare -of the Maori race. He was a candidate for the Western Maori electorate on three occasions. but each time was defeated by a narrow margin, and was subsequently appointed a member of the Legislative Council.

The late Tc Houheu Tukino was well respected and highly esteemed. Mr. Hoani Heuliou’s grandfather (it will be remembered) was the man who presented the Tongariro National Park to the Crown. After a few days spoilt at Tokorangi Mr. X-leuheu proceeded to Wellington to attend a meeting of the Tongariro National Park Board, of which ho is a life member.
