KIWITEA AFFAIRS.

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The Kiwitea County Council met at Kimbolton yesterday, Cr. L. T. McLean presiding. There were also present Crs. D. H. McLean, W. Hair, J. A. T. Brown. F. O Stack, N Y. Shannon and T. I). Wood Correspondence. Prom Mr E. G. England, • applying for a renewal of slaughter-house license. —Granted, subject to approval of Department of Agriculture. From Mr. W. F. Rouse. Rangiwahia, advising that the value of his property had been reduced by the Valuation Department from £7OO to £460, and requesting a reduction in the current year’s rates.—Left to County Clerk to advise writer that the Council has no power to grant a reduction for the current year.

From the Murchison County Council. advising that the Council was in entire sympathy with the Council’s recommendations in regard to the administration of hospitals.—Received. From Mr G. H. McNie, Upper Kawhatau Valley, offering to put in a culvert at his gate, provided the Council supplied three small pipes.— Overseer to report to next meeting. Frdm the Palmerston North Hospital Board requesting payment of quarterly levy amounting to £489 12/11. —Amount paid.

From Mr A. S. Anderson, agreeing to pay half the cost of having drain deepened and -widened on property, Mangarcre road. —Received. From Mr J. F. Ackerman, requesting permission to take 10 yards of metal from the Council’s pit at Cunninghams.—Granted at usual royalty.

From the District engineer, advising that a meeting of the No. 9 Highways Council would be held in Palmerston North to-day.—Cr. Stack to represent the Council. From Mr P. C. Ireland, requesting permission to take 10 yards of fine metal from the Peep o’ Day pit.—Left in the hands of the overseer for the Northern ridings. Resolutions. Crs. Shannon and Hair: “That the overseer for the southern ridings bo instructed to have repairs done to the road fence of the Waituna cemetery reserve.” Crs. D. H. McLean and Stack: “That the overseer for the southern ridings accept the offer of the Kairanga County Council’s roller and scarifier providede that ho can make satisfactory arrangements.” Crs. Shaw and L. T. McLean: “That application be made to the Public Works Department for a £1 for £1 subsidy on amount required for culverts in the northern ridings.” Crs. L. T. McLean and Shaw: “That the County Clerk bo instructed to furnish the New Zealand Counties’ Association with the necessary data as to the cost of management of the County for the year ended March 31, 1924.” Crs. Stack and D. H. McLean: “That the tender of L. C. Eggers for contract No. 48, at 5/- per cubic yard, be accepted.” Crs. D. H McLean and Slack: “That the Oroua County Council be asked to supply figures on which it basis its estimates of £750 for the erection of Hayne’s Creek bridge, and would it be prepared to build the bridge for that amount.” Crs. L. T. McLean and Shaw; “That the traffic inspectors be instructed to report all owners of unlicensed motor lorries operating on the County roads.” Overseers’ Reports. The overseer for the northern ridings reported as follows: Pakihikura, All the slips are being cleared away and water tables cleaned out on Mangarere road. The Sandon block roads were in fair order. On the OhingaitiPemberton, Tutaeawhio and Pcka roads several small slips came down and had'been attended to. Rangiwahia The wet weather caused several slips on the Main south road in the Mangoira and Oroua gorges and these have been attended to. To Para Para road was being attended to, but the wet weather had been against the staff and the .Work on the Otamakapua road had been delayed somewhat. Hautapu: The continuous wet weather had caused numerous small slips to come down and when possible bad points had been improved on the Mangawharariki road. —Adopted. The overseer for the southern ridings reported as follows: —Cheltenham: During the month a section of the Kimbolton road, Cheltenham cross-road, McKay’s lino and Sinclair’s line had been trimmed with the grader. A large culvert on the Beaconsficld road had been temporarily repaired but it would be necessary to replace it with cement pipes as soon as labour was available. Kiwitea: The Kimbolton road from Kimbolton township to Kiwitea Post Office had been trimmed with the grader. It was intended to make a start with the work of redecking the Upper Beaconsfield bridge during the coming week. The grading plant would resume work in this riding next week in order to prepare the roads for maintenance metal, for which tenders had been invited. Waituna: Very little work had been done in the way of improving bad points, the roadmen being’ engaged most of their time attending to usual maintenance work. A portion of the Black bridge, near Rewa, had to be strengthened and

redcckcd. The small bridge near Mr Haycock’s property had also been redecked and a subsidence repaired on the Rewa hill. Two more men had been engaged to assist with improving corners and hope to make bettor progress during this month, provided the weather conditions would allow of such. Tic culvert on the Mangapipi road had been repaired. Ongo; The grading plant had done a considerable amount of work in this riding, and Sinclair’s road, North road, Valley road Williamson’s road west, and Wilson’s lino had been trimmed prior to the grading, all weak places on these roads were patched with metal. The widening on Waituna hill had been completed and good progress was being made taking off points on the Valley road. Kimbolton; A section of the Main Rangiwahia road and Middle road had been trimmed with the grader. The surfaceman had been instructed to repair the -breakaway on the main Rangiwahia road during the coming week. Some of the concrete pipes ordered for this riding had come to hand. Peep o’ Day: The roadman in this riding had been attending to usual maintenance work during the month and Bluff road and a section' of the Main road had been trimmed with the grader. The roadman on the main Rangiwahia road was using a horse and cart to repair the weak places with metal and to take off the narrow corners. Very little damage had been don 0 to the roads in the southern ridings during the recent spell of wet weather.—Adopted.
