CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
The monthly meeting' of the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce was held yesterday afternoon. Mr H. L. Young, presiding. There were also present Messrs J. .T. O’Shea, H. B. Free, J. H. Stevens, T. E. French iA. Dawson, R. A. Noedl, T. R. Wood. J. Carter, ,T. P. Stubbs, and A. McNeill business representative of (he Now Zealand Railways, who.was given a hearty welcome. Correspondence. The Foxton Chamber of Commerce wrote asking co-operation in re-open-ing the question of getting the Railway coal through tlie Port of Foxton. • —lt was explained by Mr O’Shea that owing to the irregularity of the boat service at Foxton, the Railway Department was reticent about the proposal. The matter was left with (he chairman to investigate the position and report. From the Associated Chambers of Commerce with reference to establishing a universal New Zealand trade mark in connection with all secondary industries. —The opinion of manufacturers concerned is to bo obtained. From the New Plymouth Chamber, asking consideration of a proposal to get the Railway Department to inaugurate a night express service on the lines of the Auckland “Limited.” —Left with the chairman and Mr Carter to consider and submit a report. It was generally agreed that the service suggested was bound to come some day. From the Napier Chamber, asking consideration of a resolution addressed to the secretary of Labour asking that (he attention of the Minister of Labour be drawn to an alleged anomaly in the Wages Protection and Contractors' Liens Act. whereby, owing to the non-fulfilment of a contract by the contractor, the lien holders lose the protection supposed to be afforded by (be Act. —It was decided to bold the matter over till next meeting.. From Postal Department, regarding- [ utilising a motor service from Paekaka.riki to Palmerston North for carrying mails for stations between those two places. The request could not be acceded to as (he gain would not be commensurate with the expenditure.— Received. From the Postal authorities, stating that additional arrangements had been made for despatch of additional malls j between Palmerston North and Levin, i —Received. From the Manawatu Competitions Society, asking for donation towards the prize fund. —Received. From the Canterbury Progress League, asking the support of a movement to have the South Island Main Trunk line completed.—Received.
