The Maunganui reached Sydney at 10 o’clock yesterday morning. The postmaster advises that the mails which left Auckland on June 9th, via Vancouver, arrived in London on July 9 th. Signs that it is a hard winter were not wanting at yesterday’s meeting of the Kairanga County Council. The Awapuni ranger reported he had impounded 232 head of stock during the past month —fees received £8 7/-. The Fitzherbert tally was also close to the 200 mark —194 to be exact.

In reply to a request from the the Palmerston North Justices’ Association. the Clerk of the Court will post a copy of the revised list of J.’sP. in the vestibule of the Court House for the convenience of those who require to make declarations or sign deeds, etc.

The late Captain Preece had always In his mind the comfort and the good of others. This conventional custom ho considered really dangerous to the health of many persons. The New Zealand Counties’ Association has advised the Kalranga County Council that its executive would confer with the Minister of Internal Affairs and request him to introduce legislation to remove the present ambiguity in regard to separate riding accounts. There is a conflict of opinion between the Association and the Controller and AuditorGeneral. Mr P. J. Small said he preferred to take the opinion of Mr T. P. Martin, the Counties’ legal advisor. The clerk of the Kairanga County Council reported at yesterday's meeting that while councillors had generously dohated to the Massey Memorial Fund there had been a poor response by the 9 general body of ratepayers. Members expressed the opinion that the Government had gone the wrong way about the matter. It was decided, however, to persevere. Accordingly a letter is to be written to the headmasters of the schools in the County soliciting their assistance in keeping the matter before the public.
