COST OF BARLEY GROWING
Figurps showing the cost of producing an acre of barley and the profit a farmer may make therefrom, were placed before a recent 1 meeting of the Blenheim branch of the Farmers’ "Union (states the “Marlborough Express”). The average cost of an acre of land was fixed at £SO, and the average yield as 40 bushels of barley. The various items of expense to be met in producing an acre of crop were as follows:—Ploughing twice £1 2s, harrowing thrice 4s Gd, rolling twice ss, cultivating once 3s Sd, sowing 3s, seed at the rate of bushels 7s Gd, manure at the rate of li cwt. 9s, reaping
4s, twine 3s 4d, stocking 2s 6d, stacking 12s 6d, threshing 12s 6d, rates, 'insurances, etc., 10s 4d, carting to store ss, interest on the land at 6J per 'cent. £3 ss, a total expenditure of £8 9s Bd. The crop of 40 bushels sold at 5s per bushel would yield £lO, leaving a net profit to the farmer of £1 10s 4d or 9d a bushel. The consensus of return the farmer received for labour was not fair or adequate.
