The Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club's winter meeting opened in showery weather, witli a good attendance. The course was heavy! Nixon, the rider of Garzon in the Whakatu hurdles, sustained injuries to his back and was sent to hospital. The tote took £16.54 6. against £17,335, a decrease of £792. Results:

Chimera is in foal to Mr. W. G Stead’s imported horse Leighton.

When trained by H. Telford, Sunshot was solidly supported on many occasions by his then owner (Mr. B. Joll), but despite great track work Sunshot never repeated same in public. The result was Mr. Joll sold him to the present owners for a mere song (£IOO and a smal contingency). During the present season Sunshot has won about £llOO, so ho can be regarded as a bargain in horseflesh. There were many inquiries for Sunshot after his being advertised for sale, but after further consideration it was decided to retain this gelding and give him a spell of about two months. As Sunshot is only four years of age ho may yet develop into a fair handicap performer.

When owned by Mr. W. R. Vcmball, a big effort was made to turn' Blrkenclla into a jumper, but without success, yet like several of (lie horses disposed of recently by Mr. Kcmball. Birkenclia soon won for his new owner. Still the performance was nothing to enthuse over, and Birkenclia does not look like turning out anything wonderful over the “big country.”

There is no doubt but races for “gentlemen riders” are merely benefit races for Messrs. Morris and Howard, and either of those named can beat the opposition riders they encounter in Ibis class of race even should their mounts bo many pounds inferior to (he weights carried, says "Historicus." in the “Taranaki Herald.” In the race confined to gentlemen riders at Napier Park on Friday last General Carrington was backed down to about “even," and if ever a certainty was beaten through no fault of his own General Carrington was a case. He was ridden in an extraordinary way by his amateur rider.

HERETAUNGA HANDICAP, SS furlongs.—l Tuahine 1, 8 Tari 2,2 Koodoo 3. Also started: 8 Battle Knight, 5 Killochra, 4 Pronto, 8 Crown Gem, 7 Treadwell, 6 Crisis. FINAL HANDICAP. G 1 furlongs.— Koodoo 1(1.13, Haurangi 10.7, Battle Knight 10.5, Tari 10.3, Strategy 0.9, Lady Joyce 9.6, Pronto, Crown Gem, Jubilee 9.0. One Melbourne fielder lias opened a £50,000 double book on this year’s Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, but evidently that is not sufficient money for one back-blocks Wallingford to win at one fell swoop. This stay-at-home punter has written to the bookmaker, naming a double and asking him to back it to win £60,000. And tho weights are not out yet! But this man is evidently not the only one who would bet without bothering to sec tho weights. Charts have been issued and business has already been done. The shortest-priced horses for the Caufield Cup are Bolet Satan, Heroic, Moabite and Windbag, with Bolet Satan, Heroic, Manfred, Moabite, Stand By, Spearfelt, and Windbag at the top for the Melbourne Cup. Weights for the Melbourne and Caulfield Cups are due on June 29. Tho idea of sending Llewellyn to Trentham and tho National was abandoned ,as his owner has decided not to set him too difficult tasks in view of tho fact that he is only a, five-year-old. Lady Cavendish is the fifth Absurd youngster in six years -who has headed the list of winning two-year-olds in New Zealand, the others being Motley, Epitaph, Mermin and Humbug. According to a Taranaki writer, Pillage. a five-year-old mare by Solferino —Raid, w r as destroyed last week. Pillage, when a two-year-old, promised to turn out a useful sort, but although she won a few small races, she was only a moderate. At tho Victoria Racing Club's meeting on June 6, tho Princess Handicap, six furlongs, was won by Mr. A. T. Creswick’s Swift, by Valais. The winner was ridden by A. Reed.

Before the steeplechase season opened Eerie was responsible for groat* work over the steeplechase Jumps, but subsequently soreness spoilt an excellent chance she possessed of winning some of the early cross-country events. Indeed, on her private work, Eerie was more than a “possible’’ even in the Great Northern Steeplechase. The stoppage of work naturally is a big handicap to Eerie, but provided the. daughter of Nassau stands' up to her work she is certain to win more steeplechases this season. Eerie was much fancied for the Hawke’s Bay Steeples yesterday, but disappointed her followers.
