TRADE TREATY
Passes Canadian Commons By 80 To 42 OPPOSITION MORE VOCAL THAN NUMEROUS. [By Electric Cable—Copyright.] [Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.] Wednesday, 8.50 p.m.) OTTAWA, June 23. The Canadian-Australian trade treaty passed through all slag-es of the Commons and goes to the Senate. When the BUI came up for its second reading-, a division was called for by the Progressive members and the treaty supported by eighty votes, was opposed by forty-two. The opposition to the treaty came mostly from the Conservatives. TWENTY YEARS’ EFFORT. CONCESSIONS NOT INIMICAL TO CANADA. (Received Wednesday, 10.15 p.m.) OTTAWA, June 23. The Premier (Mr. Mackenzie King), during the debate in the Australian treaty, said Canada had been trying for twenty years to establish reciprocal trade relations with Australia. This treaty represented the beginning of inter-imperial trade, which would bo increasingly valuable to the Dominion as the years went by. If Canada failed to ratify the treaty now, the concessions which Australia had made might be repealed and progress in that direction might be set back years, if not generations. The Premier did not believe the tariff concessions made to Australia would seriously affect any industry in Canada. He urged the House to consider the treaty in the light of Imperial, rather than local or sectional considerations, and said the treaty had been negotiated when world trade conditions wore favourable to an understanding between the two countries.
