In view of the winter meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club, there was a large amount of work on the Hastings course this morning, advantage being taken of the lino weather and improved state of the going. Uncle Dave finished ahead of San Forte at the end of a fast run over li miles on the flat. Polyphemus beat The Strand over four furlongs in 504, the best trial of the morning. Huikal wont four furlongs alone in 51, finishing strongly, Manutai easily beat Stymie over the same distance. Koodoo was pleasing over six furlongs. Askari covered four furlongs alone. Kilmere beat Sasham over five furlongs. Blue Jay did four furlongs in 52. Fire Blight and Peshwa wont once round at a good three-quarter pace. Mary Bruce and Kendal were restricted to three-quarter pace work. Bonecto and Alabama finished in that order at the end of five furlongs. Olympic was ahead of Killoch over six furlongs. Jovial boat Waiooka Jack over the same distance. Crisis greatly pleased over 64 furlongs, finishing full of running. Eerie was restricted to threequarter pace work. The Hawke’s Bay meeting commences at Hastings to-day. Chief interest will centre in the Hawke’s Bay Steeples, about 3 miles. Berio lias pride of place and should go well, as should also Puwhero.

Nukumai and Vagabond should run prominently in the Hawke's Bay Hurdles. over 12 miles.

Birkcnclla and Uncle Dave arc nicely placed in the Hack Steeplechase, 2 miles.

Trespass will carry the coin in the Whaketu Hack Hurdles, miles.

General Carrington, Folly Peachum and Alabama arc a likely trio for the Winter Handicap, 9 furlongs.

Master Beckworth and Sasham should be suited by the distance, 5 furlongs, in the Hastings Handicap.

Pronto, Tuahine and.Koodoo in that order will not lack: for support in the Heretaunga Handicap.

Wench’s owner, J. Hughes, has had enough of Sydney, and ho returned with his marc by the Ulimaroa yesterday.

The aptly-named False Alarm, a halfbrother to Bobrikoff, has quitted the Melbourne tracks, and has taken up stud duty in Queensland.

The Waikanac-bred Absurb—Margarette colt, for which Colonel J. A Murdoch gave 1750gn5., has beet named Pack Point. He is being trained by G. Price, who is now at the head of the list of winning trainers at Rnndwick, with 11 wins for the season.

George Price has returned Windbag (Absurb —Oratress) to her owner, M. S. J. Gibbons. She arrived in the Ulimaroa, and will probably bo sent to Rlccarton to await the return of the license of F. D. Jones, who will then train her. It may bo recalled that owing to an error, this filly was shipped to Sydney in mistake for a pony. There is now only one Windbag in Australia.

Master Peter’s trouble is more sellout than was at first thought to bo the case. Approaching the stone wall in the Great Northern Steeplechase ho slipped and spread himself in front. So far it is not at all certain that he will be able to race at Trontham.

C. Emerson was riding in great form at the Banks Peninsula meeting on Saturday. There were only four (iat races on the programme, and after winning on Chickwheat, Jubilant and Moorland, ho failed by a bead on Solferite.

F. Loomb was considering a trip to Sydney with Illumination and Finelli, but the latest is that he lias decided to stop at home, and it is also said that Mr. Scholium is likely to cancel the trip of Ruapapa and Co., for their form at the Frankton meeting was very disappointing.

The Lucullus mare Queen March has been 'Sent to Mr. J. E. Bricn’s stud in New South Wales, and will he mated with the imported Rossendale.

A Waikato buyer has been negotiating for the purchase of the Derby winner, Black Ronald. Considering that he is the only son of Magpie at the stud in ‘New Zealand, Black Ronald should enjoy plenty of patronage.

In England this year, The Tetrarch ranged the only horse that commanded a 500 guineas fee, but there were ten at 400 guineas—namely Buchan, Gay Crusader, Gainsborough, Grand Pavadc, Hurry On, Lemberg, Phalarls, Pommcni, Sunslar, and Swynford. Man o' War leads in America, his fee equalling that of The Tetrarch.

That very promising young chaser Llewellyn is being kept moving at Ellerslio, and is in good heart.

The latest aspirants to jumping honours are Uralla and Royal Form, who were schooled over pony hurdles at Ellerslie.

Cherry Ripe went into J. Thorpe's stable after competing at the Franklin meeting, hut his stay at Ellerslie will bo of short duration. He is to race in Sydney, and will bo shipped to the other side by the first available steamer.
