There arc a fair number of rising two-year-olds in work at Ellerslie, and one of the most attractive looking is the chestnut gelding by Tea Tray from Duchess Eudorus (writes “Archer.”) The youngestor was worked at Avondale for some time by F. Davis, but consequent upon that trainer’s departure for the South, he is now being trained by his owner, Mr C. Emanuel. Royal Tea is the. name under which the. juvenile will race.

Right and Left was schooled over the pony hurdles at Ellerslie during the week, and gave a promising display.

Rafa has not mended his ways at the barrier and it is stated that the Auckland Racing Club may not accept his nomination in future.

Vociferate was out all the night before the Great Northern Steeplechase, having broken through the fence where he was located. This accounted for his bad running in the big event.

It. is proposed to alter the Hides of Racing' on the subjects of penalties, by providing that “No horse shall carry extra weight in a handicap in consequence of having won a weight-for-age race, unless specified in the conditions of the race."' Next month, also, the Conference will legislate for the 7st. minimum.

Two of Mr W. R. Kemball’s “castoffs,” in Bonomcl and Bonena, ran prominently at the. Dunedin meeting. Bonomcl won a “double,” including the Otago Hurdles, while Bonena was unlucky to meet defeat in the chief flat handicap.

Tui Zolock is the nearest thing to a gold mine in horsedom. She started four times at the South Wairarapa Trotting Club’s meeting, and won easily on each occasion. Tui Zolock was bred and is owned by Win. .Tones at Mastcrton. She is by Hal Zolock. from Pakotui.

The Te Aroha jockey, E. A. Keesing has been retained by the Trentham owner, Mr Eric Riddiford, as first horseman on the flat next season. For the past two seasons Roy Reed has had the call when not engaged by Mr A. B. Williams.

The business to be considered t? the Racing Conference next month includes a suggestion for the appointment of patrols, •‘who need not necessary be members of the club, and such patrols shall watch the races from different parts of the course and report to the stewards or judicial committee at the end of each race the result of their observations. Patrol stewards cannot adjudicate on any matter upon which they have tendered evidence.”

Klilocra, who was brought back from Australia, owing to a breakdown earlier in the season, was produced with the sprinters on the closing day of the racing at Ellerslie. The Woodville trained candidate was not prominent in the Running, but he should be all the better for the race and his turn will come.

The Auckland Trotting Club has been granted permission to hold a meeting on. August 22, in honour of the American fleet visit. The Club has decided to include a free-for-all race of nine furlongs for a purse of £750.

Cold Steel was suited-, by the way the way the race was run, and but for his rider making a mess of things in the straight he \Vould have been closer to Sunshot even if he couldn't have beaten him in the Patea Cup. On Waverley form Cold Steel is not yet a s.pent light.

Sunshot won the Patea Cup nicely. He was always well back in the early part and then ran past the field at the two furlong post to score an easy win. Out of high-class company Sunshot will always do well.

Attractive, after getting away well from the barrier, failed to keep up with the leaders and was tailing them at the half mile and also into the straight. Mr. Len Paul’s gelding finished resolutely but had no chance with the placed horses.

Shut Eye ran his best, race to date when ho came from the back to win the open sprint at Waverley. Drawing tiie inner he lost a couple of lengths at the start, and gradually Pine made this up. to finish strongly in the straight to get the decision by a neck.

Rehutai was slow in findng her feet in the sprint at Waverley, and it was also a line performance' on her part in running the winner to a neck. The grey mare has been a very consistent performer during the past month or so.

Some Red was the first away in the sprint at Waverley and it was not until well up in the. straight did ho weaken under pressure. He probably needed the race, and he should be all the better for his outing. .Mountain Bell was up with the All Red gelding at the home turn but failed to go on with it, and Lively Five was never going like a winner.

Eerie was a class above those engaged in the Hack Steeplechase, and after giving the Held a big start the marc made up ground at her leisure and finally won without much effort from Roaming, who had shown some promise in a similar race at the Wanganui meeting.. Eerie pleased greatly by her initial display over country, and if she stands up to her work should win a valuable stake.
