SHANNON.

The Elections. [From Our Own Correspondent.] Extremely keen interest was displayed by the electors in the municipal election and appears to bo a forerunner of the general election which when it comes along should shatter all previous records for voting. As the day proceeded it was the general opinion that all previous records would be shattered and so it resulted. The greatest interest, of course, centered in the contest between Messrs. Murdoch and Hyde for the Mayoralty, the general opinion being that Hyde would give Murdoch the knock out, but those electors who pin their faith in the old adage “thq man wo know,” etc., or “deeds are greater than words” were quite prepared to sec Murdoch win fairly easily and so it proved, he winning by a two to one majority.

The candidates for the Council were with perhaps three exceptions a fairly even lot and to try and forecast the result was out of the question. Of course, the members of the old Council who were seeking re-election, topped the poll and in this respect the retiring councillor always has a little up his sleeve. Taken as a w r hole the Council appears to be a very strong one and the town should benefit considerably by it. Plunkct Society. In doing so he said the chairman a'nd secretary had given up a lot of their time to school affairs, while the staff had at all times endeavoured to work in with the committee. He drew attention to the retirement of the secretary after five years in that capacity and said he thought the good work should be recognised. Mr. Downes, in seconding l , also paid tribute to the good work done by these gentlemen. The wo'i'k of the committee depended a good dal on the harmony displayed and in this respect the rulings of the chairman (Mr. Tippler) mot with general approval. He trusted the same harmony would exist between the teachers and the 'new committee. Messrs. Gustofson, Brown and Christian also spoke. The motion was carried by acclamation. Mr. Carlyle returned thanks for the kind remarks passed, and the headmaster (Mr. White) also thanked the members on behalf of the staff for the kind remarks passed. The chairman (Mr. Tippler) also returned thanks. A vote of thanks to the press terminated the proceedings. Flower Show.
