ON THE MOUNDS

Saturday's Shooting At

Trentham

HOT SCORING AT 300 YARDS.

[Per Press Association.]

TRENTHAM. Last Night

Good progress was made on Saturday with the rifle meeting, despite the fact that an early adjournment was necessary owing to rain, which had threatened all day, but held off till a little after three o’clock.

The final stage of' the opening match (600 yards) was completed, then the 800 yards range of the Marlborough, and the single range of the Canterbury match was pushed through by one o’clock. Shooting was interesting and produced many good scores, although an exasperatingly tricky wind baffled a number of men. and the varying light affected elevation. After lunch, the 300 yards of the Marlborough match was tackled, and got through with difficulty, the later men being hanmpered by drizzle and poor light. A start was made also with the 300 yards range of the Auckland match, but only two or three men had' completed their shoots when rain came on heavily and firing ceased for the day at 3.30. The short range of the Manborough match produced some very hot scoring, the winner, Mills (Kiwi) got on the possible and 49 at 500 yards, Donald (Opaki) notched two 40’s, James (Napier), Boon (Karori), and J. Feast (Greytown) each got all into the bull at 300 yards, while Soper (Tuamarina) and Goldfinch (Wellington Navals) did the same at Hie 500 yards. During the afternoon, Sir Heaton Rhodes, Minister of Defence, paid a visit to the range. Marlborough match, ten shots at 300 and 500 yards.—A grade: £5 W. S. Mills (Kiwi) 09: £4 H.
