THE DEVIL ON WHEELS.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —The by-law which prohibits pillion riding, designed primarily for the protection of the offenders themselves, is ignored in Palmerston North. On Saturday amid the throng of quick-moving vehicles a father gave an exhibition with some excitement for the onlookers, by riding round the Square with two small children, one standing on the seat behind him, the other across the bar in front. Every day some careful motorist has an anxious moment with these open lawbreakers. The remarks of Magistrate Barton published on Saturday in the “Times,” apply to this town more than any. If an enquiry were held concerning the cause of every accident, instead of those only which prove fatal, and if the by-laws were enforced, we would save many a life. Travellers and onlookers experience a different kind of thrill from that of the lady with her arms around the willing waist of her reckless motorcyclist. I am, etc., DRIVER.
