It is announced that Lord Curzon had a severe hemorrhage, and while his condition does not call for alarm, an operation may be necessary if the hemom.hge recurs. Mr. George 'Xanklcs. of Woodville, succeeds Mr. A. H. McKay, as chief accountant at the Shannon railway station and will take up his new duties to-day week. A veteran of the Indian Mutiny, Mr Thomas Andrews, aged 89, died last week at his residence in Station road, Avondale. Mr Andrews was with the brigade which marched from Bombay to the relief of Delhi, and he took part in several fierce engagements. “We have lost in the late Mr. S R. Lancaster, a gentleman who was a leading personality in the farming community not only in Manawatu hut through the Dominion,“ stated the chairman of the Manawatu Executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union on Saturday when he moved a vote of sympathy to Mrs. Lancaster and family in their recent loss. The motion was carried in silence and it was decided to forward a letter of condolence to Mrs. Lancaster. The death occurred last evening at his residence, Knowles street, Palmerston North, of Mr John Coulter, aged -12 years, after a long and painful illness. Ho was born at Ashburton and removed in childhood, with his parents to Palmerston North. More recently he lived at Woodville, where he was in business. The late Mr Coulter was well-known in Dominion athletic circles as a long-distance cyclist. Ho is survived by his widow and three children, and a sister and two brothers, Mrs Henderson (Palmerston North, and Messrs D. and W. Coulter (Woodville.) Another sister died recently.

The death occurred yesterday ' of Mr Simon Pascee, at the residence of his sister, Mrs H. Archer, 32 Campbell Street, Palmerston North. The deceased gentleman was 82 years of ago, and wos born in Cornwall, England, In his early days he worked on the West Coast goldfields later he turned farmer in Tokonui, Southland, whence ho moved to Otago. I or the last fifteen years ho has been residing in Palmerston North, with a period at Ashhurst. Last year he paid a short visit to the West Coast and attended the Hokitika exhibition and old pioneers’ jubilee. Throughout his life he took a keen interest in church affairs. His wife predeceased him three years ago, but he leaves, to mourn his loss, ten children. The daughters are: Mrs W. Chinn (Te Taho), Mrs H. and P. Archer (Palmerston North). The sons ai e Simeon (Christchurch), Charles and Albert (Tokonui). William (Melbourne), James (Greymouth), John (Palmerston North) and Art/ur (Matamau). There are also thirtyfour grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren.

Following some years of ill-health, Mr. Archibald McPherson passed away at Shannon on Friday, at the ago of 81, The late Mr. McPherson came to New Zealand from Greenock, on the river Clyde, Scotland, in the sailing slup Albion in 1864._ He arrived in Dunedin about the time of tnc gold-digging rush, and served his apprenticeship as a draper’s assistant in that town. Later ho arrived in Wellington and took over the managership of a clothing company. For 12 years the deceased had a farm and lived at Johnsonville, in which tow-n he took a keen interest in local body affairs and for quite a long time was chairman of the Johnsonville Town Board. Ho eventually settled in Shannon in 188 8, wdien ho opened a boardinghouse, which was destined later to become the first licensed hotel in Shannon. Later he disposed of the hotel, but returned to it again after ten years. A store and post office was run in connection with 'he hotel, a’nd 'Mr. McPherson had the honour of being the first postmaster in Shannon. About 20 years ago Mr. a'ad Mrs. McPherson made their home in Palmerston North, where they owmed some property, but soon after returned to Shannon, where they had lived in retirement ever since. _ The deceased took a kce’n interest in all local affairs in Shannon, being ror many years chairman of the school committee there. He was an active member of the Presbyterian Church- —being a ruling elder —and ho and Mrs. McPherson were practically the founders of the Shannon building. Their generous gifts from time to time have done much towards putting the church in the excellent financial position which it enjoys to-day. He Is survived by his wife only, there being no children.
