SCALE TOO LIBERAL. NEW AUSTRALIAN REGULATIONS [By Electric Cable —Copyright.] [Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.] SYDNEY, December 22. Discussing the case with which habitual criminals earn money, some upon their release having drawn as much as £l5O, the Attorney-General said that under the Act it was provided that habitual criminals should be required to work at some trade, and the products of their labour sold, the prisoners to receive not leas than half of the net profits of the sale. It has long been recognised by (he Department, he said, that this scale of payment was too high, and power was taken recently to alter the position. The amount in future would be determined by regulations which would shortly be promulgated.
The matter of the payment earned by prisoners was. brought into prominence a few days ago when a Judge granted a prisoner’s request to de. dare him an habitual criminal and give him a longer sentence. The prisoner said that he would be able to earn £3OO or £4OO while in gaol and this would enable, him to make a fresh start when he was released.
