GREAT FOOTBALL EVENT.

CHINESE VISIT ON WEDNESDAY. In connection with the notable football match on Wednesday next when the much-talked-of Chinese University footballers play, it is interesting to read the impressions of Mr H. A. Millard, who went to China and organised last year’s tour. He says: The game of Soccer is unquestionably and will remain, the national ball game of China. Arriving in Sydney on August 5, the team opened their tour on August 10 before an attendance of 44,000 people on the Agricultural Showgrounds, Sydney. This was the first match of the most ambitious it nerary eevr previously entered upon by any visiting combination of athletes to the antipodes. The success of the venture in New Zealand this year is assured. A large percentage of spectators will be attracted to the first game by the novelly of the occasion, but all will return to see them because of their undoubted ability in the round ball game. Play'ng the game in a manner worthy of the highest traditions of sportsmanship, maintaining a speed throughout calling for appreciation of all lovers of physical fitness and carrying through their game with a determination typical of the highest John Bull traditions of a fight, they will endear themselves to the New Zealand public. The high standard of their round ball game astonished me. I learned that they had adopted the game some 13 years previously and just as the standards set by the Britisher, socially and commercially, are being accepted and adopted by the Chinese, so also is the standard of sport adopted right throughout China and the rest of the Far Eastern countries. The game was introduced into the country by the visiting warships and the soldiers stationed in barracks. The masses watched with keen interest the- game and it gradually spread to the schools and colleges to be quickly adopted as the nat’onal game, and now it is played in every college and university throughout the whole of China.” As a curtain-raiser to the local match the local High School will meet St. Patrick’s College from Wellington at 1.15 p.ra. The big game commences at 2.30. WELLINGTON RESULTS Marist (1) v. Diamond (0). Y.M.C.A. (2) v. Hosp’tal (1). Thistle (4) v. Waters!ders (2). Institute (2) v. Karori (1).

AUSTRALIA WINS SIXTH AND DECIDING TEST, APPEAL LODGED BY CANADIANS. FBy Electric C„ Me—Copyright.) [Aust. and N.Z. a -.Qomatinn 1 SYDNEY, July 27. (Received Sunday, 7 p.m.) The sixth and deciding Soccer test Australia v. Canada, was won by Australia by one goal to nil after a hard game, which, however, was marred by questionable tacUes by both sides. The game lacked brilliancy and although it was not unduly rough, too mueh attention was given to the man. Lack of firmness on hte part of the referee led to a demonstration by the spectators and after the game the manager of the Canadian indicated that he would lodge a protest with the Commonwealth Association. The second half was noteworthy. The Canadian goalkeeper fractured a rib.
