MOKTICULT UR AT j SOCIETY. A special meeting of the Foxton Horticultural Society was held last 1 night in the rest room the Rev. W. Walton (president) in the chair. Also present were: Mesdames Pearson, Baker, Healey, Spiers, Heasman, Proctor and Moore (secretary), Messrs Chrystall, S. PC. Poole, H. Christie, N. Perrcau, .1. Ross, John Ross, W. Nye. McMurray and the Rev. Peryman. Apologies'were received from Mrs McMurray and Mr C. Symons. The date of the spring show was fixed as September 12. ft was decided that the president should interview the actinghcadmtstev of the public school regarding children’s exhibits. The schedule, as recommended by the revising committee., was adopted. The recommendation that an open class for bulbs bo added, and that a trophy to the value of £3 3/ be obtained for this class was adopted, the trophy to be won three times before becoming the property of the exhlbitor. . The following judges were appointed for the spring show:: —Bulbs and cut blooms, Mr Alan Gibson (Martou); decorative Mrs Imrio (Palmerston North); cookery, Mr A. E. Whitehead (Palmerston North). Smart Capture. Constables Given and Ryan, of the local police, made a smart capture on Thursday night. A local resident reported that his house had been entered and a quantity of jewellery taken. alleged stolen jewellery was found in Iris possession. The prisoner only arrived in Foxton the day previously, and, judging by what he had in his possession, other charges will also be preferred against him. A “wind-up” social was held in the Methodist schoolroom on Wednesday evening by the members of the choir and friends in connection with the recently held choir competitions in Foxion and Levin. Mr H. Osborne (conductor) thanked all those who helped in any way with the competitions, and esnecially Mr Thombur (organist), and expressed the hope that a Choral Society would be formed locally. At a suitable juncture, the Rev. Peryman presented Mr H. Osborne with an ebony silver-mounted baton on behalf pf the members of the combined choirs. During the evening the matter of forming a Choral Society was discussed, and the following wore appointed a committee to go into the matter: messrs J. Barr, Osorne, S. H. Poole, Hoad. and Downes. Supper was provided by the ladies. Vocal items wore given by Mrs Downes and Misses Phillips and Hoffman. The evening concluded with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” Chinese Soccer Team. The Chinese team is to visit Foxton on Tuesday, July 29, and a civic welcome will bo accorded them at the Council Chambers. 1 school, afterwards being shown over I Messrs Ross, Rough and Co.s flex j mills. They will then be motored to jMr Raikes’ poultry farm at Oroua Downs and entertained at afternoon tea. At 6 p.m. the visitors, together with about 90 guests, representing the various bodies and sports, will be entertained at a dinner at Whyte’s Hotel by the local Chinese, afterwards returning to Palmerston North by motor. Tel.;;',-. Club Ball. The Foxlon Tennis Club's annual ball was held on Thursday in the Town Hall, and the Tennis Club is to be complimented on the very successful function that it proved. The hall was tastefully decorated with greenery and streamers of blue and white, the colours of the Club. The music and floor was of the oest. an’d a delightful supper was served by a ladies’ committee. Messrs C. Bryan,t and N. Ross were M.’sC. Visitors from all parts of the district were present, and dancing was kept up till an earty hour.
