At the inquest on the school teachers Holmes and Kay, evidence was given that the former’s engagement to Miss Crankise. also a school teacher, had been broken off through a quarrel. Holmes never mentioned any quarrel with Kny. but a letter was found .n Holmes’ pocket from-a Arm of so’lc.itors who demanded payment of three guineas “for services rendered in re yourself and Kay.” Mrs Kay gave evidence that Miss Frankise occasionally visited their house.'
