OBITUARY.

MB LAWRENCE BIRKS. } A message received from the Welj lington correspondent of the "Times” last night conveyed the sad information of the death there lats in the afternoon of Mr Lawrence Birks, chief electrical engineer of the Public Works Department. The circumstances reveal a sad story. Mu- Birks reentiy started for Europe to attend the important power conference, but doctors in Adlaide advised him to return to New Zealand. He did so, and resumed work, but shortly afterwards entered a private hospital and underwent a serious operation. He gradually sank and for the past fortnight had been hovering between life and deadh. Mr BLrks succeeded Mr Evan Parry as chief of the Government’s electrical undertakings, and was about 50 years of age. His wife, daughter of the Hon. C. M. Luke died about a year ago after a long illness. Several young children are orphaned.
