CHESS NOTES.

(By A. W.)

The handicap tourney o.f the PalmorwU»n North Chess Club was concluded on Tuesday night, Whitehead losing to Wright, and Stewart. The four best actual scores wore made by Wright (It wins, X draw, ,1 losses); G. K. Morinn (I 0-2.1): T. A. Merino (1.1-11-4), and 11. It. Thorburn (10-2-1), and these players will play o(l to. decide who shall be club champion during the coming year. Immediately on (lie conclusion of the last game, (he secretary, Mr Es. plncr, announced the handicaps and totals. G. R. Morine, A. Stewart, and C. Thorburn were found to have tied for first place with :IG points each, and will accordingly take equal shares of the prizes. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the haudicappors, and much approval of their work was expressed when it was discovered that it had been done so well, that only four points separated fifteen players, a remarkable result. Following is the full score:— Wins H’cap Total

A championship game, T. A. Morino v. Wright, was won by the latter, who played the two Knight’s defence. H' lost a piece for two pawns in uie but outplayed ins opponent, whose development was very backward, in the ending. The following little game played in the Hastings Fug-.) Christmas tourney, embodies a trap which should be noted, as it is constantly claiming victims. It is often called. Blackbunic’s, as ho often brought it off in simultaneous splays, but is much older, there being at least one recorded example dated 1702.
