POLO TOURNEY.

SAV3LE CUP CONTEST. The annual tourney of the New Zealand Polo Association opened on the Feilding Jockey klub’s grounds yesterday, in perfect weather. The ground was in splendid order. Two matches of the Savile Cup competition wore decided. The first game was between Rangitikel A and WaL rarapa. This did not prove as Interesting as was anticipated, although the performance of the victors, Rangitikei A was worth watching. The match between Rangitikei B and Hawke’s Bay B proved the more interesting, and provided the audience with plenty of excitement. The following are the details of yesterday’s sgam,es,;*—• RANGITIKEI A V. WAIRARAPA. Rangitikei took command, and Nelson Scott carried the ball to the Visitors’ goal. He was unfortunate in not scoring. Close play followed, out of which N. Saott registered the first goal, and this was followed by another well placed by R. L. Levin. Wairarapa rallied, with Riddiford offering plenty of inducement, but the Rangitikel players were away again, and the third goal of the spell was registered by N. Scott.

The second chucko opened with a vigorous attack by Wairarapa, who were slightly wetter mounted. Up and down play followed, when Rex McKelvie, for Rangitikei, shot a neat goal. Wairarapa, with the help of Martin and Riddiford, maintained an open game, but Rangitikei were superior and from a scramble R. Levin shot a goal, and the spell ended. Wairarapa showed an Improvement in the third spell, and six and a-half minutes had gone before Rangitikel registered a goal through R. HcKelvio. Just on the call of time N. Sfcott registered the second goal for Rangitikei in this spell. The fourth spell saw further improvement in Walrarapa’s play, but the bulk of the work was accomplished by Riddiford and Martin. However, they were unable to score, and the only goal registered in the spell was In favour of Rangitikei, this being scored by N. Scott.

The fifth spell was very brisk, and play well distributed, but the visitors from over the range were unable to stay, R. McKelvie registering Rangitikei’s ninth goal. Nelson Scott was unfortunate in not scoring just before the end of this spell, his shot stopping short oi the goal. Vigorous play by Wairarapa marked the sixth spell, and it was not for want of opportunities that that team did not score. Martin and Fenwick both materially helped in opening the play, but on each occasion they were robbed by Rangitikei. N. Scott scored twice, and the third goal was scored by R. McKelvie, who took the shot from R. L, Levin.

The seventh spell was marked by a well merited score by the visitors, registered by Martin from Riddiford. Playing briskly from the whistle, Riddifard got clear away, carrying the ball up the field with Levin chasing, and covered by Martin. A miss in front of the goal by Riddiford was keenly taken by Martin, and the audience applauded. Shortly afterwards Wilson Scott aided Rex McKelvie to make the score in this spell even. Then Rex McKelvie again scored, and the game ended— Rangitikel A 14, Wairarapa. 1. Mr j»x, Murphy was umpire.

HAWKE’S BAY B V. RANGITIKEI BThis game opened very briskly with imxjroved play, and the opening spell closed without a score being registered. All players were well mounted, and their play appealed to, the public, who were quite excited with the dashing play. The second spell produced further brisk and equal play, without a score. The third spell saw the play still vigorous, with flashes of brilliant riding, but no score eventuated. R. Scott, for Rangitikel, found the goal with a nicely placed shot in the fourth spell and F. Mackenzie, for Hawke’s Bay made the score even. In the fifth chucko, Mackenzie again scored. Rangitikei were on the verge of finding the goal on several occasions in the sixth period but on each occasion were outwitted. Manoeuvring from a scramble Mackenzie again scored bringing the score to 3—l in favour of the East Coast representatives. The final spell created general excitement and Rangitikei played to even up the position but they succeeded in registering only ono goal for which R. Scott wa!s responsible. Hawke’s Bay replied and N. Campbell’s brilliant effort was well rewarded. The game ended: Hawke’s Bay B 4, Rangitikei B 2, Mr L. Macßean Stewart was umpire.

To-day’s games will be as follow; At 2 p.m., Hawke’s Bay A v. Feilding; at 3.30 p.m., Rangitikei A v. Hawke’s Bay B.
