The Awahuri Dairy Company’s payout for the current month was 1/6, PACKERS CEASE BUYING. ARGENTINE SHIPMENTS TO CEASE, (Received Sunday, 7 p.m.) BUSNOS AYRES, Oct. 20. The British and American packers have informed the Government that they will cease purchasing Argentine beef, with the expectation, that all shipments to. Europe will cease within a month as a result of the passage of a law fixing the minimum price at 27 centavos for chilled beef, 24 centavos for foreign beef, and 19 centavos for Continental type. Packers do not object to the price, but to the classification, since they have been accustomed to purchase whole herds, and the would so seriously derange their methods of procedure that it would be more economical t'o cease operations. The Government informed the packers that it regrtftted having to establish the law, but it would be enforced.
SMITHFUELD RATES.
ARGENTINE FIXES* BEEP LIMIT. WELLINGTON, Last Night. The New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board has received the following cable from it's London office, dated 19th October, advising Smithfleld delivered prices at that date as follow: — Prime Canterbury lamb, 29lbs to 361bs 10 7-Sd per lb; 371bs to 421bs, 10 3-8 d; 43lbs to 50lbs, 9|d; second quality lamb lOd; other selected brands of lamb, 291bs to 3Gibs, 10Jd.; 37lbs t'o 42lbs, 10 l-Bd. Mutton: Light-weight wethers BJd per lb, medium-weight wet'hers 73d, heavy-weight wethers 7 3-8 d; ewes 6d. Ox beef: Fores 27.8 d, hinds 43d. The Argentine Government has fixed the minimum price for beef payable fa growers. These prices are higher than present prices, in consequence of which Now Zealand beef prices aro much firmer. SALE REPORTS.
The Kairanga Auctioneering Co., 'Ltd., held tho usual Saturday sale on October 20. There was a heavy yard, ing of both poultry and pigs Competition was keen and prices went up to the previous Saturday. Poultry: Although wo had a heavy yarding, competition was keen, and tho supply was far short of the demand. Fat hens sold up to 8/ per pair, laying hens C/6 to 7/6 per pair, White Leghorn cockerels 6/6 to 7/9 per pair, Black Orpington cockerels up to 8/ per pair, week-old ducklings 1/6 each, six-weeks-old chicks 5d each. Pigs: There was a splendid yarding of stores and porkers, which were in great demand. The bidding was brisk, and all lines were quitted at record prices. Weaners fetched up to 24/6 each, porkers £2 8/ to £3, slips up to £2 '6/6, empty sows £2 9/6'to, £3, barrows £3. Vegetables and produce: New potatoes, Ist grade 3*d per lb, second grade 2*d to 2d per lb. Old potatoes, (table) 15/ per cwt, seed potatoes 10/6 to 12/6 cwt, pig potatoes 3/6 sack, lettuces 3/ dozen, rhubarb 6/ per dozen bundles; pollard 20/ sack, wheat 20/ sack, barley 10/ sack, cabbages 12/ per sack, onions 12/ cwt. Messrs J. L. Bennett and Co., Ltd., held their usual yard and mart sale on Saturday, 20th inst. Thare was .a big yarding of pigs, and prices showed a decided drop on last week’s rates. We penned over 700 head of poultry, which sold well at prices on a par with last week’s rates. There was an exceptionally big attendance of buyers from different parts of the district, and coinpetition was keen throughout. We quote as follow:— Pigs, weaners, forward 20/ to 22/6, backward 14/ to 17/ slips 20/to 24/6,stores 27/ to 31/, porkers £2 7/ to £2 17/. Poultry: Hens, fat 7/ to 7/10, laying 6/ to 7/6, others 5/8 to 6/, cockerels, good 6/6 to 9/, ducks 6/ to 8/6. all per pair; duck lings, week old, 1/4 to 1/8 each, 1 weeks old 6/ to 8/ each; Ivns and chickens 15/ to 17/6, turkeys gobblers 15/ to 16/6 each, hens 9/ to 10/6 each. Produce: Now potatoes, first grade 3id per lb, second grade lid to 2d, short supplies; old potatoes, best table 13/ to 14/ cwt, onions (Victorian) 12/ cwt fowl wheat 23/6 sack, pollard f 200) 20/, chaff 6/ sack. Fruit: Apples, stermers 9/6 to 10/ bushel, Doherty’s 8/ to 9/ bushel, Statesman S/. Munroes 8/, others 5/ to 7/: pears, W. Coles 12/. W. Nells 13/ bushel rhubarb 6/ to 7/ dozen, asparagus 9/ to 10/ dozen.

Levin and Co., Ltd., have received the following cablegram from their London agents, dated October 19 1923: Quotations New Zealand prime Canterbury lamb, 28/42, 10§d.; North Island lamb, 28/42, 10gd.; prime Canterbury mutton, 56/64, 7i}d.; North Island mutton, 56/64, 7gd ewes, 48/64, 6d.; New Zealand prime ox beef, 160/200, hinds, 43d.; fores, 2Jd. These prices are ex store. As compared with last week’s quotations Canterbury mutton is Jd. cheaper, North Island mutton and ewes id. cheaper. Lamb and beef unchanged.
