RECONSTRUCTING VIENNA.
ONE MILLION TO BE SPENT.
The new election for the Municipal Council of Vienna will be held simultaneously with tho general election for the National Assembly, on October 21, and, for the sake of economy, the number of councillors is to be reduced from 165't0 120. The large majority of the municipality are Social Democrats, who, whatever their tactical mistakes, have deserved wel' of the capital, and done much good in the way of reconstruction work. In order to give work to the unemployed and improve the state of things in Vienna, they are going to spend another 311 milliard kronen (about £1,000,000), the largest amount so far invested for the purpose. Blocks of flats in the city, cottages in the near vicinity, and a new children's home are to be built. In tho north-west of Vienna a little garden city is to be opened. The streets, sanitary arrangements, tram service, working of gas and electrity, and method of burial and cremation will be improved and enlarged.
The notoriously bad paving metal used for the Vienna streets, which is the cause of so much dust, and also consumption, is to be replaced by porphyrite. the municipality having acquired the available material. Further, quite a number of dilapidated buildings will be repaired, and the public lighting arrangements improved, and new bathing places (of which there is a sad dearth) opened. In a fine woody suburb a new "sun and air bath" has already been started by the municipality.
