The "Daily Express" gives details 'of the life of Englestein, the "fire king," which show that he lived in grandiose style at Hackney, where he was known as " Dandy .Toe," yet he had no money wherewith to pay for 'his defence, his friends being called on for a contribution of £IOOO. Englestein was a big gambler also, and lost a large sum of money in organising a fire in a spacious furniture showroom, in the north of England, which was stocked with furniture valued at £BO,OOO. These premises were stocked for nine months before the fire, then the insurance companies refused to pay. When planning a fire, he worked with mathematical precision. He left the precise number of screws and bolts the assessors would expect to find after the furniture was burned, though dn many cases the furniture was removed before the fire. He was arrested owing to his talking too loudly In a restaurant when under the influence of drink, detectives at an adjoining table overhear, ing him.
