NOTES. Entries for the New Zealand Trotting Cup close at noon to-day. Nominations for the New Zealand Cup close to-morrow. All nominations for (he Wanganui J. C. Spring Meeting close to-morrow night, at 8 o’clock. The annual meeting of the lianawatu Racing Club will be held this evening at 8 o’clock. Of the sixteen horsemen who steered winners at the C.J.C. yteeting, A. Wormald came out on top with three successes and a dead heat. A. McDonald was on three winners, and R. S. Bagby on two winners and n dead-heater. The Masterton trainer, W. Hawthorne, was the most, successful of the 21 who had winning representatives at Riccarton last week, with three wins. J. McCombc and J. T Jamieson came next with a win and a dead heat apiece. J. J. Kennerley, J. Bryce, and W. J. Tomkinson were the most successful reinsmen at the Addington meeting, with three wins a piece. During the six days’ racing at Riccarton and Addington, there was a shortage in the totalisator turnover of nearly £25,500. ' Oakleigh is included among the division who knew nothing of the racecourse until reaching the mature age of five years, and oyen then he was only called upon to carry silk on four occasions, writes "Phaeton.” The next season, however, saw Oakleigh out contesting 15 races, and lie had the record of winning seven of his engagements at six years old. In addition to winning dual Grand National honours, Oakleigh has captured the Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase, the Wellington Steeplechase, and the 'A.R.C. Winter Steeplechase so that he is a horse, of distinction.

The Heathcote Handicap, on the concluding day at Riccarton provided the most interesting finish of the meeting, when L’Amour and Sunny Loch, first and second favourites respectively, flashed past the post on terms. It was a great performance on the pn.rt of Sunny Loch and demonstrated that his Winter Cup win was no fluke. Santonio cost his local admirers a pile of money at Christchurch. His cup performance was far from impressive, althoughe he got a. bad start and the horse was unable to approach the track record on which his backers pinned their faith during his local preparation. Local stabled had a very lean National this year. Not a single win, and the only horses that got into the money were Santonio and Rowan (third). The three biggest hurdle events of this jumping season have all been won by jockeys who obtained a chance ride, Bagby secured the

mounts on Kohu in the Great Northern end on First Born in the Winter Hurdles at Trentham through accidents, and in the Grand National the mishap to Poanul gave Walls the ride on General Advance. « The National Hurdles distance, the “Watcher” reminds us, is more than two miles and a half. The .field started from the nine furlongs post and went round once again when reaching the post the first time. As Rlccarton is only a score or so yards short of one mile, and a half round, the held ran nearly two miles and five furlongs. TROTTING STAKES. The forty-third annual report and statement of accounts of the Manawatu Racing Club, to be presented at the annual meeting to.-night, states that the financial aspect of last- year’s operations must, in the circumstances, be considered quite satisfactory. In consequence of the general depression still existing throughout the Dominion, and, like all other clubs, states the re. part, the Manawatu Racing Club has suffered a further reduction in the amount passed through the tolalisator, amounting to £81,942, as against £74,74 9 last year. but they were not so severely hit as other clubs. To compare this year’s figures with the prewar years, the figures read: 1912-13, £108,823; as against this year, £IBO,. 805 —an increase of £72,022. This indicated that the club was still progressing satisfactorily. After allowing for depreciation, amounting to £1529 17/, there was a credit balance of £73 4/9, against a debit balance of £998 15/4 last. year. The amount paid in taxation during (lie year was £14,932 17/9. The cluli’s actual contribution Vo this amount was £5015 14/8; the balance, £9917 3/1 being collected and sent on to tbc Government, it was necessary for the committee to take into immediate consideration after the autumn meeting the erection of a stand for the outside public. To effect this and pay off an overdraft at the bank, which was covered by a personal guarantee by members of the com, mittee, £20,000 worth of debentures, at 7 per cent, had been floated, and £12.500 put on the market. This was immediately subscribed, and a further sum of £3OOO had since been taken up, leaving £4500 for further issue w r hen the money was required for the work now in progress. The. total stakes this year amounted to £12,820, which was over llie presenned amount allowed under the rules of racing, and £5485 better than tho stakes for 1912-13. The grounds, lawns, tracks, and appointments at Awnpuni were well maintained by the caretaker and Ins staff. A largo outside stand was being erected in reinforced concrete, capable of seating about 1800 people, with the necessary rooms and accommodation below. The committee desired to thank the honorary officials and permanent staff for the satisfac. tory manner in which their duties had been carried out.

Officials retiring by rotation, and who arc eligible for re-election arc; The president, Mr F. S. Mcßae; vicepresidents, Messrs J, Goring Johnston and J. H. P. Strang; hon. treasurer, Mr C Louisson, junrj committee, Messrs E. L. Broad, G. C. Kceble, W. Randell, and E. Wood. The following officers have been nominated: President 1 . Mr R. S.
