ST. HELEN'S HOME.
DEPUTATION TO MINISTER OF HEAI/TH. A deputation, comprising the Mayor (Mr F J. Nathan) and Messrs J. A # Nash, J. Linklatpr, and W. 11. Field, M.'sP., waited an the Minister of Health (Sir Maui Pomare) in Wellington yesterday, with a request that t'he Department should carry out tho erection of a St. Helen's Home, in Palmers, ton North.
Mr Nash reviewed the position, and pointed out that Mr Parr and Dr. Valintine had agreed to the proposal under certain conditions.
Mr Nathan and others supported tho request, pointing out tho urgent necessity of'providing proper accommodation for women in their hour of trial. If the Hospital Board had control of tho home, the charges, it, was considered, would be too high for working people to meet. The great object of the schemo was to provide pleasant surroundings and trained nurses, Mr Nathan also pointed out that a petition; signed by 5000 residents, had been presented, objecting to the erection of the home onlisspital grounds. Dr. Frengley, who was in attendance, advised that such a proposed institu. tian would cost £IO,OOO. [ S|ir Maul asked if the people could raise a total of £SOOO, in which case the £ for £ subsidy would make the cost available, and stated that in other centres tho land had been donated privately. Messrs Nathan and Nash were agreed that the transfer of, say, an acre of land to the trustees could readily be effected. The Minister, in a sympathetic reply, undertook to reply to Mr Nash in a few days, and stated that in no circumstances would any existing building be used for the hospital.
