BILLIARD SALOONS.
reduction of age limit.
ASKED FOR BY PROPRIETORS.
The proprietors of billiard saloons in Palmerston North wrote to the Borough Council last night asking that the by-law relating to billiard saloons making it Illegal for persons under the age of 20 years to frequent such rooms, be altered to permit of persons of 18 years entering billiard saloons. Cr. Hodgene: “ I move that it be referred to the by-laws committee.” Cr. Oram: “Why the by-laws committee ? I move that no action be taken."
Cr. Jackson: “ I second that motion.”
Cr. Hodgens: “ I take it that if that motion is carried and no action is taken, the Council will enforce the existing’ by-law in private clubs and in the Y.M.C.A., for instance, where youths under 20 years play billiards. The Council must be consistent in this matter.”
The Mayor sajd the Council had no jurisdiction over private clubs—onry over licensed houses. No action was taken.
