HOCKEY SHIELD MATCH

MANAWATU V- NELSON. Hockey enthusiasts are promised an exciting contest in the New Zealand Challenge Shield match between Manawatu (the holders) and Nelson (the challengers), which will eventuate at the Sportsground to-morrow. After winning the shield from Auckland last year, Manawatu successfully defended it against Wellington, and last week they managed to retain the coveted trophy iii their match with Hawke’s Bay Playing conditions on that occasion were the reverse of ideal, the heavy, rain which had fallen converting tho ground into a morass, which seriously hampered the players. Despite the adverse conditions, Manawatu won by 3 to 1, and as tho fine weather now prevailing has enabled the ground to harden up, the shield holders may be depended upon to give a good account of themselves on Saturday. The Nelson team is reputed to bo a powerful combination, and a fast game and keenly-fought contest may confidently be anticipated. Tho match, which will commence at 2,45 p.m., will be preceded by a curtain-raiser at 1.15 p.m. between Manawatu ladies and Feilding ladies.
