ONGARUE DISASTER.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —I see in your Itading article of Saturday, a suggestion that a pilot engine be used during wet seasons over especially bad patches of line on the Main Trunk railway. May I beg space to suggest this thought, that the railways use one of their motor jiggers lifted with a dynamo and battery and powerful searchlight, and, if thought necessary, a wireless outfit. In the event of a slip on the lino the jigger could be taken off and the light used ::s a warning, and sufficient power would be available to run a wireless of a good radius. A jigger of this type is capable of great speed on a good line, and also of very slow speed o.n a bad piece of line, and the expense of such an outfit during the very short period it would be required would be very small. — I am, etc.. ERNEST FERGUSSON.
