FLU IN THE SOUTH.
MATTERS ON THE MEND. [Per Press Association.] DUNEDIN, Last Night. The medical officer of Health (Dr. T. McKibbin) stated to-day that the position as regards the influenza epidemic in Otago and Southland has shown at least a temporary improvement Doctors had had a busy time, biif there was now a reduction in the number of cases. For the 24 hours ended at noon to-day, no cases cither of pneumonic influenza or of ordinary pneumonia had been notified. For previous 24 hours, the following pneumonic cases had been reported: Otago 3, Wallace 2, Waitaki 1, and .Southland 1.
When the Otago Boys' High School assembled tins morning, if was found that 147 boys were absent, most o£ them suffering from influenza. Six of the masters were also absent and three or four of those present were not in the host of health. In the circumstances, it was decided to clo.se the school till Wednesday morning.
The Girls' High School ha.s also been affected, but not so seriously, as only two teachers are incapacitated. The school is being kepj_< open.
