"WORST IN NEW ZEALAND."

! LOCAL OPERA HOUSE. The deposit plans and report regarding the proposed alterations and additions to the municipal chambers, were forwarded to the Borough Council last night by the architect, Mr. H. T. Jaggard. The Mayor, Mr. F. J. Nathan, said it would be no doubt desirablo to place the alternative schemes before the public— namely, whether they proceed with th e alterations at £SOOO, or whether a complete new building be erected. " Seeing that we have practically the worst Opera House in New Zealand, and that Pal mors ton North is going ahead so steadily," said Cr. W. L. Pitzherbert, " I should like to see it converted into municipal offices if possible." It was explained that the Opera House was already leased for three years, The Mayor: " Two years to run." Cr. Hodgens thought if would be a good idea. He should like to seo every possible .avenue probed before taking the matter to the ratepayers. Personally, he was not satisfied with the estimate of £BOOO. The Mayor said that the reason tho last estimate was so high apparently, was because the whole of the gas staff would be housed under the same roof. This would mean that the Broad-street property would be freed and the rental alone from this would bring in £3 per week, so it would bo seen that the cost would not prove extortionate.

Cr. Oram also spoke along these lines. He moved, and it was decided, to refer the matter to the works committee for report.
