SEMI-OFFICIAL TESTS.

REPLY TO MR. GREEN, (To the Editor.) Sir, —The statement referred to in your paper of the 15th. inst., by Mr. Green, wherein he asserts that at the Dairy' Farmers’ Union Conference I mentioned -when advocating the setheme, put forward by the Kauwhata branch of the .Dairy Farmers’ Union, that such scheme would be a check on semi-official test, is not correclt. 'The only time T mentioned the word check was when describing our scheme, whereby every cow in a herd would have to be tested and factory returns of butter-fat would be a check on returns of c)ows tested. I mentioned the word semi-official when I said our scheme was on all fours with semi-official test with this difference that the cows instead of milking 3G5 days, as is the general rule with semi-official cows_ would only be tested for the usual jactation periods, say, from nine to ten months, freshening again to factory dates, and only milked twice daily. Mr. Green will, therefore, see that it would be impossible for this scheme to be a check on semi-official test, as 1 understand cows tested under this system are milked three times a day, say, 3a.m„ noon, and 10 p.m. Under our branch scheme every dairy farmer will aim at having his whole herd up to a certain standard of butter-fat, and not lest only his best cows, and in some cases not study the cost of production.—l am, etc., N.
