MAKURA QUARANTINED.
MILD FORM OF SMALLPOX. TWO BOYS FROM CANADA PATIENTS. MAILS STILL ABOARD. [Per Press Association.] AUCKLAND, Last Night. An outbreak of Alastrim, a mild form of smallpox, confined t'o two children on board the Makura, produced an unexpected development when the vessel anchored in the stream at 1.30 p.m. on her arrival from Vancouver. Following a medical examination and as a precautionary measure, the health officer, Dr. Sharman, gave instructions for the steamer to proceed to Motuihi quarantine station to-morrow. The two patients are third class male passengers, aged about twelve and thirteen respectively, and Joined the steamer at Vancouver, being bound for Wellington. They were first confined to bed last Saturday, about the time the ship reached Suva, and were isolated by the ship’s doctor, The Makura had 140 passengers for Auckland, and Suva, also G7O bags of English and American mails for the Dominion, and a quantity of cargo for Auckland. The mails have not been landed, pending instructions from Wellington. The two patients ron/.ain on the ship under the care of the ship’s doctor. The Makura patients and passengers will land at the quarantine station after vaccination to-morrow. The cargo and mails will be fumigated, and mails will be landed to-day. After landing her passengers, the ship will be disinfected. It is probable that the. Sydney passengers, numbering 50, will then return on board, and the, vessel proceed in quarantine to Sydney. The period of quarantine for 100 Auckland pasesngors will be determined by the Chief -Health Officer'. The Port Health officer says the complaint is nearer chicken pox than smallpox.
