PRISONERS OF BANDITS.
DILATORY GOVERNMENT. DIPLOMATIC CORPS APPLIES PRESSURE. FANTASTIC RANSOM CLAIMED. [By Electric Cable—Copyright] [Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.] (Recgived Thursday, 5.40 p.m.) PEKING, May 16. The Diplomatic Corps to-day handed the Chinese Government another Note demanding information as to what stops wore being takgn to secure the release of the captives, and pointing out that the continual lapse of time would mean an increase in the indemnity.
It is understood the Corps is considering the Powers’ withdrawal of the recognition of China. Meanwhile the situation is growing hourly more Serious. Th c bandits have retreated further into tne mountains with their prisoners, and the negotiations are being conducted with difficulty. Thg betndits continue to make fantastic demands. It is now reported tfigy arc asking £600,000 ransom. The condition of the prisoners is reported to b e none too good. An Italian captive, Signor Musso, who is suffering from a weak heart, collapsed from his great hardships.
