RUGBY FOOTBALL.

’VARSITY TEAM DEFEATED. BT 20 TO 14. [By Electric Cable —Copyright.] [Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.] (Received Wednesday, 10.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 16. The Metropolitan fifteen defeated New Zealand UniversiiV by 20 to 14, after an unexciting contest. Both teams lacked combination, though the Black forwards in the first half executed a number of fine dribbling rushes. At half time the scores were nine points all. Thompson, Wogan, and Crossman scored tries for the local team, and McDonald, a try for New Zealand, Diack converting, while Hopkins, from the half-way boundary, dropped a magnificent field geM. The second spell slightly navoured the Metropolitan team, but the New Zealand threequartors’ neutralised effective forward work by faulty handling. The bellringer rang the bell twenty minutes before time by a mistake, the match ending abruptly. Buchanan and Thorne scored tries, Burrows and Crossman converting. Tire last named also kicked a penalty goal, while for New Zealand, Murray scored, Diack converting.
