HOSPITAL FIGURES. In his annual report to the Palmerston North Hospital Board,, the medical officer stated that at the commencement 9S patients were in the hospital, 1704 were admitted during in the year, and 1707 were discharged, leaving 95 on March 31, 1923. Of those discharged, 13G5 were cured, IG7 were relieved and 102 died. The daily average number of patients was 93.4 as compared with 89. S la,st /year, and the average stay in the hospital was IS.2G days and the general death rate for all patients treated was 5.6 G per cent. If those were excluded, who died within 24 hours of admission, the death rate was only 4.7 per cent., 13G cases of infectious disease were treated and 1G died. Tho cases were: Diphtheria 70 cases, with ';four deaths (death rate 5.7 per cent); scarlet fever 43, with one death (2.3 per cent); phthisis 15 cases, with seven deaths (46 per cent.); puerperal fever 6 cases, with three datbs (50 'per- cent); cerebro-spinal meningitis 1 case, which proved fatal; lethargic encephalitis, 1 case.
Seven hundred and six>«-onc, operations had been performed and ] G of the patients had died, giving a general operation death rate, of 2.102 per cent. For appendicitis, there were 119 operations, hernia 37, and goitre 4. All of those had recovered. Cancer had been the cause of 11 operations with two deaths, and for laryngital diphtheria, seven cases, with three deaths.
