COLD MUTTON.
GAOIi FOR SHEEP-STEALING. TWO MAORI'S SENTENCED. The two Maoris Poto Harawira, alias Joe Bonner, and Rako Wilson, who came before His Honor, Sir John Salmond, in the Supreme Court, on Tuesday for sentence on a charge of sheep-stealing, were sentenced yesterday morning. His Honor mentioned that both men had pleaded guilty to the offence. However, Harawira, it seemed, was the chief offender as it was to his house the sheep had been taken and there consumed: and there was reason to believe that it was not the first occasion on which he had stolen sheep. He would be sentenced to three months' imprisonment, in Wellington prison. In regard to the other accused, Wilson ,His Honor took the view that, to some extent, he had been led into the matter by Harawira, but His Honor also took into account the fact that the accused had been convicted not long ago for asaulting a Chinaman, and he would be sentenced to one month's imprisonment'. Mr. J. L. Merton appeared for the accused.
