ARE THEY CRIMINAL RESORTS.
IN DEFENCE OF BILLIARD SALOONS.
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —As a frequent visitor to your town, I was not at all surprised to see in this morning’s paper an indignant protest from the billiard-room proprietors of Palmerston North as to the conduct of their saloons. Now, as to the extra hour at night, being granted, of course, 1 have no concern, although it is hard to see why t*Jic pre-war hours should not be reverted to, but, as to the management of your billiard-rooms here, 1 would like to testify that in no town in New Zealand have 1 noticed such well conducted saloons, nor have I ever seen anything in the conduct of their patrons to which the slightest objection could be made.
You have very many things in this beautiful town, of which its citizens may well be proud, and I have spent many a happy hour on your Sports, ground watching the king of outdoor games being played, but 1 have also watched the play in the king of the in-door games in what I call the most decently-conducted saloons in New Zealand.—l am, etc., “COMMERCIAL.”
