A MATTER FOR INVESTIGATION.

An apparently reliable source of information discloses a someAvhat alarming report, to the effect that one purchase of certain scientific equipment for a Government Department, which cost £35,000, has to be stored up indefinitely, if not actually scrapped, because it is either unsuitable os ’cannot be made available through 'lack of a skilled officer to instal it. The statement is of sufficient political and economic importance to merit a public enquiry, but, while there seems to be no doubt of its authenticity, naturally we are not prepared to disclose the source of our information. The Government have every opportunity Avithout that, either to deny the truth of the statement, or to investigate the matter and take steps to prevent a recurrence of the waste.
