BUTTER PROFITS GO TO MIDDLEMEN.

MR MASSEY’S PRONOUNCEMENT. (From Our Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, July 5. The Premier gave an interesting expression of opinion on butter profits during the course of his statement to the House on the second salary cut. He reminded members of the comment of Judge Fraser on the difficulty of assessing the cost of living on a wide range of articles, owing to the fact that the high prices lessened use, or in the case of food caused the use of substitutes. This happened when butter went to 2/6. Mr Witty: The Government was responsible for the sixpence. Mr Statham: Who is getting the profit now? Mr Massey: The middleman. The producer is not getting much of the increased price, and that has happened before in connection with the winter season.
