LABOUR PARTY.
SIXTH ANNUAL CONFERENCE PACT WITH THE LIBERALS URGED. TO AVOID VOTE-SPLITTING. (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Last Night. The sixth annual conference of the New Zealand Labour Party has opened, 90 delegates being present from all parts of the Dominion, Mr F. Cooke, of Christchurch, presiding. The day was spent in discussing the executive’s report dealing with the party’s activities during the year. The most important remits to be discussed urged that the party should make some agreement with the Liberal Party for the purpose of avoiding vote-splitting at the forthcoming elections. There are two remits on this subject—one from the Wellington Railway Workers’ Union, and the other from the Wanganui Railway Servants’ Union. The report stated there was a membership of upwards of 25,000. showing a considerable increase, despite trade depression and unemployment. Some of the larger organisations were not yet affiliated, but worked in close co-operation and harmony with the party A resolution was carried congratulating the Irish Labour Party on its great success at the Irish Free State elections.
