EARTHQUAKES.

Those who heard the first of this winter’s series of lectures arranged by the Palmerston North Borough Council will agree that Professor Shelley in his brilliant exposition of the modern trend in education set a very high standard for those who will come after him. Such lectures more than justify the action of the originators of the scheme, and must have a far-reaching influence on the life of the community. Of an entirely different order is the second lecture of the series, which will be delivered by Dr Adams, Government Astronomer, tomorrow evening in the Municipal Hall. While it can hardly be claimed 'that the study of earthquakes is of as great consequence to our national well-being as the study of the child, no one will dispute the statement that just now Dr Adams’s subject is of considerable Importance, and his statements regarding the present puzzling position at Taupo will be looked for by a large number of people. He would be a foolish man who would hazard a theory for the prevention of earthquakes, but it is quite within the bounds of possibility that the advance of scientific research might yet bring us to a position where accurate forecasts would warn Inhabitants of countries liable to visitations, and thereby be the means of protecting life and property.
