OTIRA TUNNEL.

RESTRICTED SERVICE IX SEPTET IBER. (Prom our Parliamentary Rep.) WELLINGTON, Last Night. The Minister.for Public Works made a comprehensive statement to the House to-day on the subject of the Otira tunnel and the possibility of its early use for traffic He said it could not be definitely stated when the tunnel would be ready fqr traffic. The first locomotive would be here in October, and the balance by the end of November. Boiler accessories went down in the Wiltshire, with the result that this portion would be delayed, so that he could not hold out hopes of traffic being started before February, possibly March. He hoped to be able to allow pigs and produce from the West Coast to be conveyed through the tunnel after the middle of September so long as not more than three hours weekly were absorbed in this traffic.
