FOMENTING CLASS HATRED.

TALL talk from the soapboxes. MR. MASSEY GIVES A HINT. (From our Parliamentary Rep.) WELLINGTON, Last Night. What was described as a demonstration of unemployed was attended by about 500 people in the Post Office Square. Wellington, on Monday. The character of some of the speeches resulted in a suggestion from one newspaper that the Crown Law Office might give a statement as to its attention. Speakers referred in strong terms to the “master class,” the existence of a class war, and the disregard of employers for the interests of workers Mr Mitchell called the Government’s attention to the matter in the House, declaring that some statements were made which no man had a right to make to a public meeting and it ought to be stopped. It seemed to him that the meeting was being held not so much to help the unemployed as to forward communist propaganda. Mr Massey replied that he would have the matter investigated. The policy of the Government was that it did not wish to interfere with free speech any more than it could possibly help, but it was not going to allow seditious utterances by any man. and, he added: “We happen to know that there are people going around the country who apparently are working on behalf of Bolshevism or something very nearly approaching it.” Mr Glenn: Get them locked up! Mr Massey: Possibly their turn may come, and it is just as well to let them and their friends know they are receiving the attention of the Government.
