OBITUARY.
MR. GEORGE WOODROOFE. Bv the death of Mr. George Woodroofe, which occurred yesterday at his residence, Pahiatua street, 1a - merston North, loses another or us pioneer settlers. The deceased gentleman came to New Zealand m 1871 and for some years resided in Mastcrton, but while Palmerston North was still little more than a village he decame a settler at Hokowhitu, and was identified with most of the progressive movements which laid so surely the foundations of the city. While carrying on farming at Hokiwhltu air Woodroofe also conducted a successful general store at Terrace End in conjunction with his sons. He was prominently identified •with the early efforts to secure educational facilities at Terrace End, and largely as a result of his work the school at that end of the town was established. Mr Woodroofe was a member of the Licensing Committee for a number of years and held the position of chairman for two years. In the work of Friendly Societies he was particularly active, and was secretary of the Manawatu Lodge for about 20 years. He, also held the oflice of secretary for the Foresters for ten years, jn 1905 lie was made a. Justice of the Peace and continued to carry out his duties faithfully till sickness put a period to his activities. The late Mr Woodroofe had reached the age of 73 years and enjoyed excellent health until quite recently. He was born in County Wicklow, Ireland, and in the year 1871, married Miss Susan Sebery in Dublin on the eve of emigrating to New Zealand. Mrs Woodroofe remains to mourn the l*ss of her lifelong partner and a wide circle of friends will do honour to the memory of another sturdy pioneer gone from us. A family of six sons and three daughters Avas the issue of the marriage and they arc well-known and highly respected in and around Palmerston North.
