RONGOTEA. Dr. C. H. Laws, M.A., president of the Methodist Conference, has been visiting the circuits of New Zealand in his official capacity, and on Thursday evening last visited Rongotea. The meeting was held in the church, and notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather, there was a good attendance. The chairman, Rev. J. Wills, in introducing the speaker, mentioned that the degree of D.D. had lately been conferred on him by the University of Canada Dr. Laws proved to be a very forcible and fluent speaker, and was listened to with great attention. Figures were quoted showing that in English-speaking countries the Methodist Church was the leading one numerically. His mission there that night was not only to say that in numbers and finance the Church was great, but it was great spiritually, and it was his intention 1o deal with that aspect, in his address. The speaker quoted from the London "Times" and "Spectator." in which journals it had been stated that John Wesley and the Methodism he preached had more historic interest than any other happening in England, and were of more far-reaching effect than the victories to British arms under the leadership of Pitt. Dr. Laws went on to define what was necessary to keep the Church spiritual—earnestness, fellowship and faith —and by apt stories drove home the truth of his remarks. ]n conclusion he wished to lay special emphasis on the care given to the children and young people both in the home and In the church. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the lecturer, and after a solo by Mr Lees, supper was dispensed by the ladies.
