DEATH OF MR W. J. PHILLIPS
NOTABIjE RACING CAREER ENDS. By the death in Palmerston North yesterday of Mr. W. J. Phillips, one of the best-known figures in racing circles on this Coast has passed from our midst. The late Mr. Phillips was a farmer of many years' standing in the Sanson district, retiring three years ago to Palmerston North, where he took up his residence in Alexandra Street. In the world of sport Mr. Phillips had a reputation for the keenness of his interest in racing and a high sense of honour. His colours were carried to victory on a number of splendid animals, most noted among them being Nobleman, twice winner of the Manawatu Cup, and also of the Wellington Cup. He was a prominent member both of the Bulls Racing Club, and the Fellding Jockey Club. He was also a prominent member of the Manawatu County Council. The j deceased gentleman was also W|9ll-kno\vn In Masonic circles, being; & holder of office in the Grand Lodge. He was 68 years of age v and leaves a widow to mourn her loss. The interment will take place at Sanson on Monday.
