KING'S SPEECH
HOMAGE FROM FRANCE. [By Electric Cable —Copyright.] [Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.] PAKia, May 13; Before leaving Boulogne, the King Kent a message to President Millerand expressing the Empire's gratitude to Fran ;e for the generous gift of the ground for the cemeteries, hallowed by memories of common sorrows and glories. M. Millerand. in his reply, says: "France will never forget the. sublime sacrifica made by the .British soldiers who fell by the side of French soldiers in the course of the terrible and glorious struggle against unjust aggression. The memory of the heroes o the British army will for ever iemaiu piously honoured in the land where they fought so magnificently. Together with the French nation and Government. I join in the homage Your Majesty has just done to the glorious British and French soldiers who are for ever uiited in the gratitude and admiration of the two countries." The whole press warmly approves the King's speech. Many of the newspapers pointedly differentia I e between his speech and Mr. Lloyd George's attitude to France, at Gt.-.i >a, contending that Mr. Lloyd George does not represent English feeling. "Figaro" states: "There issued from every sentence of the King's speech a high emotion. Who knows but the old hatreds which have separated Fro nee and England lie buried in the graves of our heroes, and that even the. monstrous efforts of the politicians will fail to reawaken them." "Republique Francais" states that the King's pious pilgrimage comes opportunely to remind the exasperated French nation that Mr. Lloyd George is not England. . "Rappel" suggests that "some kind friend should translate the King's speech into English for the benefit of Mr. Lloyd George."
